Mather Mine B, Negaunee, MI

This is the site of a former iron mine in Negaunee, MI (near Marquette). One of the larger buildings has been converted into the Negaunee High School. The other still remains abandoned right next door. There are tunnels that run between the two buildings, but they have been cinder-blocked over.

The abandoned building has what appears to be an old mine hoist. You would expect more height in a building that was a mine hoist, but why else would you have a huge drum attached to a motor with a couple inch thick steel cable wrapped around it? If anyone knows what this building was, please, by all means, drop me an email with what you know.

There are two sets of pictures here, the set from April 2004 is of the interior of the abandoned building. Most of the pictures from the spring of 2003 are of the scarred landscape, and show some foundations of buildings that have since been demolished.
