Abandoned House in Mandan, MI

Mandan is a ghost town located in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan. It was an old mining town in the late 1800's. Since then, most of the buildings have fallen into disrepair and eventually fell down. There are three houses still standing, and they were used as summer cottages and/or hunting lodges for a while. Of the three remaining houses, two still appear to be maintained. This one here was once neglected, but is currently being restored.

Old house in Mandan

Many people who take photos of this house end up having a ghostly figure appear in the upper left window in the house. Pasty.com has a discussion of one of those such photos. I have seen that face in more than one photo taken by different people, one dating back to the 70's or 80's. I tried taking a photo of that window, but didn't have much luck.

I also went inside of the house before they started the restoration, and noticed that the pane of glass in which the figure appears has a board over it, and a piece of tar paper in front of the board. I don't know if that would have any effect on the 'ghost' appearing in the window for some people. I tried taking a picuture of the window from the inside, but my camera that day didn't have a flash, so it didn't come out too well. The photo did however come out rather interesting.

Last I heard, this house was owned by the Keweenaw Historical Society. I have 9 photos on here, the first 4 are from the summer of 2003, the last 5 are from Memorial Day weekend, 2004, and were shot looking through the windows. You can still find Mandan easily off of US-41 in the Keweenaw Peninsula. It is just a few miles south of Copper Harbor, and there is a wooden post by the side of the road marking it's location.
